Denmark cannot defend Greenland because of Ukraine: Minskaya Pravda distorted the meaning of a Politico article

The US defense budget is the largest in the world — 100 times larger than Denmark's.

According to Timofey Syrokvash, host of ‘Spicy Politics’ show, Denmark has no chance of defending Greenland in a war with the USA. He cited Politico, which supposedly argued this due to Denmark transferring most of its weapons to Ukraine. The Weekly Top Fake team investigated what the article actually said.

In January 2025, Donald Trump refused to rule out a US invasion of Greenland. Commenting on this news, Timofey Syrokvash, the host of ‘Spicy Politics’ on the YouTube channel of the Minskaya Pravda news agency, on January 17, stated that Denmark would be unable to defend itself in the event of war:

"Due to its allocation of a substantial amount of weapons and military equipment to support Ukraine's armed forces, Denmark would lack the capacity to resist Greenland's potential annexation by the US under President Donald Trump. That is the conclusion made by Politico. Well, Ukraine didn't particularly appreciate such generosity and has already stated that the bilateral agreements signed in 2024 aren't exactly bilateral. Ukraine, for instance, doesn't owe anyone anything. Anyway, just give us the money."

The article by the American publication Politico, referenced by the host, covers the topics and uses the language cited by Syrokvash, but it does come to the conclusions he voices. The text states that the ground combat equipment provided to Kyiv, despite substantial volumes, would still be of little use in defending Greenland from a hypothetical US invasion and would not impact the situation.

The US defense budget is the largest in the world — 100 times larger than Denmark's. The difference in military size is also enormous: 1.3 million personnel in the US Armed Forces versus 17,000 in Denmark's. Furthermore, part of the US military has been stationed in Greenland for several decades. The theoretical war between Greenland and the US is described in the article as the shortest in the world due to the island's lack of defensive capability.

Regarding the agreements between Denmark and Ukraine: Denmark committed to long-term military support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russia, while Kyiv, in turn, guaranteed to use Denmark's military aid for self-defense. Additionally, Ukrainians pledged to combat corruption, improve governance transparency, and align with international standards. There is no mention of Ukraine's obligation to defend Denmark's territory.
